Be Your Own Advocate in Contract Negotiations
Recorded On: 11/16/2024
The goal of this presentation is to highlight areas in which the PA can identify in which they provide value to the medical practice in which to correctly leverage (or advocate) in the negotiation process. Ideally, this lecture will highlight objective measurable metrics and some that are not as easily measured.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Gain a greater understanding of criteria for contract development in which negotiation can be more approachable.
2. Develop an approach to negotiation that relies on measurable and subjective data and minimize a more emotional response in such negotiations.
3. More readily identify pitfalls of negotiation with the goal of knowing when to divert from such conversations or how to change tactics.
Jason Roddick, DMSc, MBA, PA-C
Dermatology Physician Assistant
Internal Medicine Critical Care
Jason Roddick started his career in dermatology nearly 18 years ago. While working, he recognized the confusion of many of his colleagues about the business aspects of being a Physician Assistant in the workplace. Questions stemming from workplace efficiency, contracts, negotiation, and more emerged. He quickly asserted himself via forums, direct emails, discussions, and conferences as a leader in business within the PA profession, especially in dermatology.
Over the past 18 years, Jason has posted over 300 forum documents illustrating business models, efficiency, and contract types for PAs. He has also corresponded with over 2,500 PAs directly on questions related to their work environment and contract negotiations. Jason can be seen speaking at several conferences on efficiency and revenue models. He will often form spontaneous discussion groups in hallways at conferences speaking directly to colleagues on the many matters of business that affect our field.
Jason has worked in all areas of dermatology from large-volume cosmetics, Mohs surgical assisting, and surgical and medical dermatology. While in the career, Jason completed his MBA and more recently his Doctorate of Medical Science with two certifications: Dermatology and Healthcare Administration and Management.
Jason has been happily married for 18 years to his wife Stacey. They are the proud parents of two fur babies, miniature dachshunds Switch and Dozer. Stacey has recently graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine and is currently a second-year resident in Internal Medicine Critical Care.
