This module focuses on the basics of dermatopathology, understanding the microscopic anatomy of the skin, choosing and processing skin biopsies effectively, and interpreting pathology reports. The module covers practical tips to avoid common biopsy pitfalls and highlight the benefits of using specialized dermatopathology labs.
This activity has been reviewed by the American Academy of Physician Associates Review Panel and is compliant with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.5 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid from one year after earning. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
After participating in this module, the learner will be able to:
- Have a basic understanding of the discipline of dermatopathology.
- Have a basic knowledge of the microscopic anatomy of the skin.
- Be able to choose the appropriate type of skin biopsy in a variety of clinical settings.
- Have an understanding of the steps involved in the processing of a skin biopsy specimen.
- Be able to avoid common pitfalls related to skin biopsies.
- Have a clear understanding of what information should be provided to the lab and the dermatopathologist to maximize the return on biopsy specimens.
- Understand basic cutaneous histology terminology.
- Be familiar with the most common stains used in the dermatopathology lab.
- Meaningfully interpret all components of a pathology report.
- Understand the added value of using a dedicated dermatopathology lab.
