This module provides an in-depth exploration of key dermatological therapies, including laser therapy, phototherapy, and photodynamic therapy (PDT), along with essential post-procedure care and wound management. The module also includes practical guidance on infection prevention, pain management, and follow-up care.
This activity has been reviewed by the American Academy of Physician Associates Review Panel and is compliant with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 2.75 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid from one year after earning. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
After participating in this module, the learner will be able to:
Section 1: Therapeutic Procedures
- Demonstrate knowledge in performing:
- Acne surgery
- Cryosurgery (liquid nitrogen)
- Intralesional injections (IL)
- Local, regional, and topical anesthesia
- Nail avulsion
- Incision and drainage
- Surgical shave removal of appropriate lesions
- Punch excision, punch biopsy of skin lesions
- Elliptical surgical excisions
- Repairing dog ears
- Electrodessication for benign destruction
- Curettage of benign lesions
- Electrodessication and curettage (ED and C)
- Simple surgical wound closure
- Intermediate surgical wound closure
- Be familiar with post-procedure instructions such as:
- Unna wrap/boots
Section 2: Post-Procedure Instructions and Wound Complications
- Describe appropriate wound care dressings.
- Describe post-procedure instructions.
- Describe post-procedure information regarding normal wound healing as well as signs and symptoms of complications.
- Demonstrate knowledge of pain management.
- Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate follow-up post-procedure.
- Demonstrate knowledge of post-procedure infection and empiric therapies.
Section 3: Phototherapy
- Explain the different types of phototherapy.
- Discuss the basic principles of photomedicine and UV light.
- Explain both the acute and chronic effects of UV exposure.
- List the risks and side effects of phototherapy.
Section 4: PDT
- Describe the scientific concepts of photodynamic therapy (PDT).
- Describe and identify the indications and ideal candidates for photodynamic therapy.
- Explain the process for obtaining consent for performing PDT, possible complications, and patient expectations related to therapy.
Section 5: Laser Therapy
- Describe the pathophysiology of lasers.
- Describe laser safety and types of lasers.
- Describe indications for lasers in dermatology.
- Describe adequate documentation required for laser treatments and follow-up.
