This module is designed to provide a common understanding of pruritus (itching). It explores the basics of pruritus, including its etiology, and outline a general approach to diagnosing and treating patients experiencing this condition. This module will discuss both common and uncommon presentations of pruritus, developing a differential diagnosis, and performing appropriate diagnostic workups. Additionally, it will address the importance of patient education and communication, helping you set realistic expectations while selecting the most suitable treatments for various cases.

This activity has been reviewed by the American Academy of Physician Associates Review Panel and is compliant with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid from one year after earning. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

After participating in this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Discuss the etiology of pruritus.
  2. Outline the approach to the patient with pruritus.
  3. Describe appropriate topics for patient education related to pruritus, including setting appropriate expectations.
  4. Discuss both common and uncommon presentations.
  5. Develop a differential list.
  6. Understand appropriate workup to support diagnosis.
  7. Classify and select the most appropriate treatments.
