Module J: Hair, Nails, and Mucous Membranes

This module provides an in-depth exploration of the definitions, classifications, underlying causes, and clinical manifestations of disorders affecting hair, nails, and mucous membranes. The content is designed to offer a comprehensive understanding of these conditions, equipping providers to diagnose, treat, and manage them effectively.

After participating in this module, the learner will be able to:

Section 1: Hair Disorders

1. Discuss the diagnosis and treatment of non-scarring alopecias.
2. Discuss the diagnosis and treatment of scarring alopecias.
3. Identify and describe various hair shaft abnormalities.
4. Discuss the diagnosis and treatment of hypertrichosis and unwanted hair.
5. Discuss the diagnosis and treatment of hirsutism.

Section 2: Nail Disorders

1. Identify key portions of nail anatomy.
2. Differentiate benign and malignant tumors of the nail unit.
3. Recognize and manage nail dystrophies.
4. Diagnose and manage both acute and chronic infections of the nail unit.

Section 3: Mucous Membrane Disorders

1. Identify common oral mucosal manifestations of systemic diseases and recommend treatment.
2. Identify premalignant and malignant lesions that appear on the oral mucosa and recommend treatment.
3. Identify common oral mucosal manifestations of systemic diseases and recommend treatment.
4. Identify premalignant and malignant lesions that appear on the genital mucosa and recommend treatment.
