This module provides an in-depth exploration of complex dermatologic conditions affecting the skin and connective tissues. Across three sections, this module will help to identify, diagnose, and manage a variety of autoimmune and connective tissue disorders. Each section focuses on different groups of diseases, including lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositis, sclerotic skin disorders, and connective tissue disorders.

After participating in this module, the learner will be able to:

Section 1: Lupus Erythematosus and Dermatomyositis

  1. Recognize the clinical features of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CCLE, SCLE, ACLE).
  2. Understand the association between skin changes with cutaneous lupus erythematosus and systemic disease.
  3. Discuss the treatment algorithm for cutaneous lupus erythematosus.
  4. Recognize the clinical features of dermatomyositis.
  5. Understand the workup for dermatomyositis including screening for associated malignancy.
  6. Discuss the treatment algorithm for dermatomyositis.

Section 2: Sclerotic Diseases

  1. Discuss the spectrum of sclerosing skin disorders from local skin disease to systemic disease.
  2. Identify cutaneous manifestations of sclerosing skin disorders.
  3. List the workup of patients with suspected sclerosing skin disorders.
  4. Discuss treatment options for the various types of sclerosing diseases.

Section 3: Connective Tissue Disorders

  1. Recognize the different types of perforating disorders and their etiologies.
  2. Discuss the differential diagnoses of perforating disorders.
  3. Understand the treatment option for perforating disorders.
  4. Recognize heritable connective tissue disorders including characteristic skin findings.
  5. Identify the different types of dermal hypertrophies and discuss the pros and cons of various treatment options.
  6. Recognize conditions associated with atrophic changes in the skin and discuss treatment options and their limitation in these conditions.
