Textured Hair, Tailored Care: Managing Alopecia in Skin of Color
Recorded On: 06/27/2025
Hair loss in patients with skin of color presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to variations in hair biology, clinical presentation, and cultural considerations. This session explores the most common types of alopecia seen in patients with skin of color, including central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), traction alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and androgenetic alopecia. Emphasis will be placed on distinguishing scarring from non-scarring alopecias, selecting appropriate diagnostic techniques (including when to biopsy), and tailoring treatments to meet the specific needs of this population. Attendees will leave with practical strategies to improve outcomes and build trust with diverse patient communities.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the most common types of alopecia affecting patients with skin of color and their distinguishing features
- Differentiate between scarring and non-scarring alopecias through clinical evaluation and appropriate use of diagnostic tools
- Select treatment strategies that account for hair texture, cultural practices, and patient expectations
- Demonstrate an understanding of the psychosocial impact of hair loss in patients with skin of color and communicate with cultural sensitivity
- Incorporate evidence-based approaches and emerging therapies into individualized care plans for diverse patient populations.
